WHAT TO EXPECT
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL SESSION LOOK LIKE?
Sessions usually last 60-75 minutes and are generally scheduled one to two weeks apart. Sessions typically begin with a structural and movement analysis. You may be asked to do knee bends, arm arcs, and walk so I can see how your joints move.
Hands-on work is done on the table as well as seated. Clients are actively engaged in the process of sessions, and unlike most other forms of bodywork, you will be asked to participate by moving in specific ways that increase the effectiveness of the hands-on work.
Sessions also frequently include work with you seated on a bench, standing, and/or walking to integrate the structural changes achieved on the table. We will re-assess at the end of the session so that you can get a felt sense of the changes in your body.
HOW MANY SESSION DO I NEED?
If you have never had Rolfing® work, I highly recommend a Ten-Series. The Rolfing® Ten Series systematically addresses imbalances in the fascial network. The Ten Series first frees the superficial fascia then the deep fascia, with each session building upon the previous to create support for the next level of release. Depending on the client, it can be 10-13 sessions.
If you want to try it out before committing to the whole ten session series, I would recommend trying one to three sessions to see if this work is right for you. The first and third sessions are natural stopping points and although it does not go as thoroughly into a person’s structure, it is balanced and beneficial.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
There will be a certain amount of movement within each session, please wear what makes you feel comfortable when you are standing, walking and moving. Here are some suggested possibilities for what to wear to sessions:
Women:running shorts and a bra, two-piece bathing suit or underwear (no thongs please).
Men – running shorts, boxer briefs (no boxers please).
DOES ROLFING® HURT?
Rolfing® SI should not be painful. The work has evolved and is more nuanced since it was first developed and delivered, but unfortunately the reputation of being painful has not evolved with it. There may be some discomfort as things shift and “let go”, but it should feel like a welcome, needed change. A Rolfing® session is client-centered - a place for open communication, trust, and partnership.
